Julie Bayer

Julie Bayer was born and raised in Paris. From a very young age she was immersed into photography thanks to her father and explored this world using his cameras. When she entered high school she started to take photographs with an analog camera.

During her first year of training at the BTS Auguste Renoir in Paris, she had a revelation on her artistic practice, while leaving for an internship in architectural photography alone in South Korea. « I was 19 years old and the isolation at the end of the world really shaped my way of approaching photography and my inspirations ».

There are two main focuses in her work: place and time. « I am passionate about architecture; half of my work is dedicated to places and the research related to them. The other half is occupied by research around the self-portrait, very subjective self-portraits ».

Place and time are personal and intimate subjects that intertwine. According to Julie, architectural photography requires appropriating a place, reinterpreting it. The artist thus likes to play with the ambiguity and duality of these photographs to allow varied and personal interpretations for everyone.

From a technical point of view, a large part of her practice lies in retouching. Indeed, she uses the hybridization between digital and analog which offers textures and mystery enriching her themes.

« I work very often using black and white to focus on the lights and shapes. Color is not at all at the center of my research ».

Like the artists who inspire her, such as the writer Paul Auster, living through a photographic fiction, managing to convey a message without surrendering is something Julie aspires to in her work.
